This landmark underscores the importance of reducing environmental footprint while aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. For business leaders and aviation enthusiasts alike, this development signals a transformative shift in the industry - one that balances operational excellence with ecological responsibility.
This initiative kicks off with SAF comprising at least 2% of the fuel mix for these flights, a proportion set to climb progressively to 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, and an ambitious 70% by 2050. Flights departing from the UK follow a similar trajectory, starting at 2% in 2025 and aiming for 10% by 2039 and 22% by 2040. Crafted from renewable sources like used cooking oil and animal fat waste, SAF slashes greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to traditional jet fuel. This innovative fuel meets rigorous safety standards, offering a practical solution for airlines striving to decarbonize without compromising performance.
VNA spokesperson hailed the move as a “pioneering step” in the carrier’s “greening” journey, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable aviation. The initiative supports Vietnam’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and enhances the passenger experience via high-quality, eco-conscious travel. For tracking corporate sustainability goals, partnering with an airline that prioritizes such measures could amplify the company’s environmental credentials.
This milestone arrives as Vietnam Airlines projects a record pre-tax profit of 7.32 trillion VND ( approximately $287.7 million) for 2024, ending a four-year loss streak. With an anticipated 23% jump from last year, the airline demonstrates that profitability and sustainability can coexist. As the carrier expands its SAF usage, it collaborates with supply chain partners to ensure scalability, setting a precedent for the aviation sector.
For industry watchers, VNA’s proactive embrace of SAF offers a compelling case study on innovation and environmental stewardship. This can propel a national flag carrier into the future, inspiring others to follow suit in the race.
