The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Smart Freight Centre (SFC) joined forces in the CO2 Connect platform to enhance transparency and consistency in carbon emission calculations for air cargo shipments.
Upon a passenger flight version from 2022, this partnership aims to develop a similar tool for cargo operations. Employing real operational data, both parties seek to support airlines, shippers, and freight forwarders with accurate carbon emission reports, aligning with global decarbonization goals.
Due to varying methodologies, reports calculating CO2 emissions have been a paradox across the aviation industry. This lack of standardization complicates researchers’ efforts to measure and report emissions accurately. In response, IATA’s CO2 Connect platform applies a unified approach: Recommended Practice (RP)-1726 assured to be reliable and in line with industry standards. This methodology is part of a broader initiative to create an authoritative tool for reducing carbon footprints.
Vietnam Airlines (VNA) has joined the board as the first Vietnamese airline to participate in the CO2 Connect platform. The current environmental context drives VNA to broader conscious operations, notably a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The airline also made headlines earlier this year as front-rowing in Vietnam to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on a commercial flight from Singapore to Hanoi in May 2024.
By joining the CO2 Connect platform and using SAF, Vietnam Airlines underscores its dedication to sustainability. These actions and its participation in industry-wide efforts to reduce emissions place the airline at the forefront of the aviation sector’s push towards a greener future.
