HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) is a specialized training program designed to prepare individuals, particularly those who work in offshore industries or frequently travel by helicopter over water, for emergencies involving helicopter ditching and underwater escape.
Classroom Instruction
The training usually begins with classroom instruction covering theoretical aspects of helicopter emergencies, including the types of emergencies, procedures, and safety equipment.
Helicopter Safety Procedures
Participants learn about helicopter safety procedures, including pre-flight checks, boarding and disembarking, and the use of emergency exits.
Use of Safety Equipment
Participants are familiarized with the various safety equipment on board helicopters, such as life jackets, life rafts, and emergency breathing systems (EBS). They learn how to don and use this equipment properly.

Helicopter Ditching Simulation
HUET training includes a practical component where participants experience a simulated helicopter ditching. This is typically done in a controlled environment, such as a pool or a specialized training facility. Participants wear their safety equipment during this exercise.
Underwater Escape
The most critical part of HUET training involves simulating the underwater escape from a submerged helicopter. Participants learn how to remain calm, unbuckle seatbelts or harnesses, find an exit, and escape safely to the surface. They practice these skills multiple times in a controlled underwater environment.

In-Water Survival Skills
Participants learn in-water survival skills, including how to manage their breathing, stay afloat with a life jacket, and signal for help. They may also practice boarding life rafts.

Helicopter Egress Training
Specific techniques are taught for egressing (exiting) a helicopter, which may be inverted or partially submerged, in various orientations.

Safety Drills
Participants practice emergency drills and procedures, reinforcing what they have learned throughout the course.
HUET training is critical for ensuring that individuals can respond effectively and safely in the event of a helicopter ditching or emergency landing over water. It is typically required for offshore workers, including those in the oil and gas industry, but may also be relevant for other professionals who travel by helicopter over water bodies. Training providers often adhere to international standards and guidelines, and the training is periodically refreshed to ensure that participants maintain their skills.
