Vietnam Airlines claimed its 2024 milestone in bringing eco-green closer to Vietnamese aviation by using Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF). On May 27, Airbus A321 was refueled with a blend of SAF at Singapore’s Changi Airport for its return flight to Hanoi, making Vietnam Airlines the first carrier in the country to utilize SAF for commercial passenger flights.
This achievement not only highlights the airline’s commitment to sustainability but also its role as the first national carrier in the Asia-Pacific region to benefit from Neste’s SAF supply at Changi Airport. Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel, has clear ambition on climate change solutions and growing support in emissions reduction through modern SAF products.
Despite significantly higher costs —six times more than conventional jet fuel—Vietnam Airlines is dedicated to expanding this usage. “We believe that SAF will help create a more sustainable future for aviation while maintaining excellent service quality,” said Nguyen Chien Thang, Executive Vice President of Vietnam Airlines.
In addition, Vietnam Airlines has undergone several strategies to reduce CO2 emissions by optimizing flight routes, new generation of fuel-efficient aircraft, and monitoring fuel consumption. The results were optimistic as nearly 70,000 tons of CO2 emissions were deducted in 2023, surpassing the 2022 figure by more than 50%. Vietnam Airlines announced its long-term goal by 2050 is to achieve international recognition of being a carbon-neutral bloc.
