Imagine being above the ground, steering a helicopter all by yourself! For VAA students at Barcelona Flight School, this dream became a reality. As embarking on their first thrilling solo flight they marked a significant milestone in becoming certified helicopter pilots.
At BFS, the journey starts with ground school. Here, they learn all the important components of flying, like how helicopters work, the rules of flying, and how to stay safe. After ground school, students are ready to be on real helicopters, but not alone. They start with an instructor who teaches them how to control the aircraft, navigate, and communicate with air traffic control. They practice take-offs, landings, and hovering—staying in one place in the air, which is trickier than it sounds!

After hours of practice, it’s finally time for the first solo flight. The student pilot must perform a series of maneuvers to prove they are ready. When the instructor is confident in the student’s capability, they let the student take off alone. Barcelona Flight School is filled with excitement and nervousness on this special day. The cadet goes in the helicopter, ensures all the pre-flight checks, and starts the engine. The student is in complete control, in pure thrill, aligning all their training efforts to the test.

After marveling above the skies, the student lands the helicopter safely back on the ground. Achievement is celebrated with cheers and applause from instructors, and fellow students, and a customary bucket of water splashed on the pilot. Water is believed to be good luck and is used as a cleansing method for many cultural traditions. Pouring water over a new solo pilot is like washing away their ‘student’ label and welcoming them as a real pilot.
It’s a moment of pride and joy, knowing they’ve taken a huge step towards becoming a licensed helicopter pilot.
Completing a solo flight is just the beginning, the students will continue to learn more advanced flying techniques and eventually take a final test to earn their pilot’s license. An unforgettable experience and also, a testament to their hard work and dedication. So, the next time you see a helicopter flying above, remember the amazing journey the pilot went through to get there!
